Because in their vastness they are out of sight from most of us, the oceans are devastated in ways
that would not be tolerated on land. Just as atmospheric pollution has given us global climate
change, our oceans are undergoing drastic changes that threaten not just a few species, but rather
the processes on which life as we know it depends. The threats are multiple: pollution, overfishing,
habitat destruction, and global climate change, among others.
Sea turtles are not just cute and lovable mascots. They represent many of the problems in the way
we manage our oceans, as they are under assault from poaching, accidental by-catch from
commercial fishing, habitat loss and a mysterious worldwide epidemic linked to pollution.
They are, in short, an indicator. As the turtles go, so do our oceans. And so do we.
